You shouldn't install any part of sendmail really, just postfix. Please post the output of dpkg-query -L postfix grep sendmail. I'd say your install is botched in some specific way that also causes reinstall to malfunction - try backing up all config files by hand, then apt-get remove --purge postfix do back up first!

Then there must be a mistake in the installation tutorial. Am I right? But It should not be a typo. In another old version of the tutorial, they told to execute the same command. Older virsion of the tutorial: confluence. I don't know, I don't have an older installation here to look it up. Maybe you should try contacting the author or maintainer and report their mistake?
